Meta-Analysis Confirms Safe Lip Filler Injection Depths
A new meta-analysis published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal, by Mateusz Trezciak et. al, analyzed the anatomical depth of the superior labial artery (SLA) and inferior labial artery (ILA) to help guide safer dermal filler injections.
Researchers reviewed measurements from arteries across different facial regions, including: between the cheilion and Cupid’s bow peak, at the Cupid’s bow peak, and at the facial midline.
The findings showed that the average depth of these arteries ranges from 4.59 mm to 4.90 mm beneath the vermilion surface. This supports current safe injection guidelines of up to 3.5 mm in most lip regions and up to 4 mm in the superior vermilion. These guidelines help reduce the risk of vascular complications during filler procedures.
The study authors recommend using ultrasound before extensive lip augmentation or complex, high-risk procedures for added safety and precision.
