CBS News Investigation Raises Concerns About Unapproved Retatrutide Sales
An investigation by CBS News found that websites, telehealth providers and other businesses are promoting and selling retatrutide, an experimental weight-loss drug that has not been approved by the FDA and cannot legally be marketed for commercial use in the United States.
CBS News reported that several companies selling retatrutide displayed LegitScript certification, a credential that can enable health care businesses to advertise on major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Google and YouTube. The investigation raises questions about how unauthorized sellers are gaining access to advertising channels that are intended to screen for compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Retatrutide, currently under development by Eli Lilly, has generated significant interest following promising clinical trial results. However, the drug remains investigational and has not received FDA approval. CBS News found that demand for the medication has fueled a growing online marketplace offering products represented as retatrutide outside approved clinical trials and traditional pharmaceutical distribution channels.
The investigation underscores a recurring compliance issue for aesthetic and wellness practices: consumer demand often outpaces regulatory approval. Similar concerns have emerged in recent years around compounded GLP-1 medications, peptides and products marketed as “research use only” compounds.
Practices that purchase, prescribe or administer unapproved drugs risk scrutiny from regulators, pharmacy boards and medical boards, regardless of patient demand.
