GLP-1 Overdose Case Highlights Telehealth Safety, Compliance Risks
A recent report about a woman who was hospitalized after an apparent GLP-1 overdose is highlighting the importance of patient education and clinical oversight in medical weight loss programs. According to TODAY, the patient said she followed dosing instructions provided through a telehealth weight loss service before experiencing severe vomiting and other symptoms that led to a three-day hospital stay.
GLP-1 use continues to rise, with nearly 11% of U.S. adults having used GLP-1s for weight loss. TODAY cited data from America’s Poison Centers showing an almost 1,500% increase in calls related to overdoses or side effects involving injectable GLP-1 weight loss drugs between 2019 and 2025, with nearly 23,000 reported cases during that period.
The patient told TODAY she was prescribed a compounded GLP-1 medication through a telehealth provider. After reporting that her initial dose was not effective, she received instructions for a significantly higher dose. She later sought emergency medical treatment after becoming ill.
For medical spas offering medical weight loss services, the case is a reminder of the need for appropriate clinical evaluation, patient education, medication management and ongoing follow-up care. Providers should ensure patients understand how to administer medications correctly, recognize potential side effects and know when to seek medical attention.
