New Georgia Medical Board Statement on IV Therapy Statement
The Georgia Composite Medical Board has released some clarifying information following the June 4th meeting at which they discussed their recent policy statement on IV hydration and therapy. The official statement is here with an FAQ available here.
The statement issued June 5th says that the purpose of the IV hydration statement was not to create new policy but rather to provide clarity regarding the Board’s longstanding interpretation of the law and regulations. They also say that its purpose was to combat compensated arrangements that do not have meaningful collaboration between the physician and advanced practice provider. The board notes that they have denied roughly 6.6% of submitted protocols since they began using their online system.
The board reiterates that they are not advising practitioners to close their practice or stop practice as a result of this new policy statement. If a practitioner has an approved protocol, it remains approved. The Board commits to closely examining the relationship between the physician and collaborating provider to ensure that there is independent medical judgment and a true collaborative relationship. The board intends to continue discussions with stakeholders and will collaborate with other regulatory boards on the interpretation of statutes and regulations. They state that they will advise the public with further updates.
