Legendary Stanford Chief Passes Away at Age 88

Lars Vistnes, MD, Professor of Surgery emeritus and former department chair at Stanford University School of Medicine, San Francisco, died at his home on Monday, March 28, at age 88. Dr. Vistnes is survived by his wife, Carol; his son, Greg; and another son, Dean, who completed his plastic surgery residency at Stanford University’s Division of Plastic Surgery. 
Dr. Vistnes earned his medical degree at the University of Manitoba, Canada, and completed his general and plastic surgery residencies at St. Francis Memorial Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital, San Francisco, respectively, before he was recruited by Donald Laub, MD, for a full-time faculty position at Stanford. Dr. Vistnes was the first plastic surgery chief at Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital, and later he became its surgical services chief.
