The Problem Patient: Identification and Treatment
Wednesday, December 4
1–2pm, Central Time

Description:
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In a high performing-practice, most patients are satisfied—but not all. How do you identify a “problem patient” before you start to work on him or her?

As hard as we try to screen patients well, no one’s processes are perfect. Mismanaged expectations can create post-procedure headaches. And even when you set expectations properly, barely noticeable signs of body dysmorphic disorder may blossom into full view on post-op visit number one.

We’ll discuss:
  • How to identify the problem patient (red flags);
  • How to prevent conflict before it starts; and
  • How to manage conflict with a problem patient when it occurs.
The old adage, “Once you’ve started working on the patient, you’ve bought them,” holds true. We’ll teach attendees how to prevent buyer’s remorse.

Presenter:
Jeffrey J. Segal, MD, JD, ByrdAdatto

Jeffrey J. Segal, MD, JD, is a neurosurgeon turned serial entrepreneur turned attorney at ByrdAdatto who has literally been in both business and medicine. Segal was a neurosurgeon in private practice before beginning the second phase of his career as a serial entrepreneur in the healthcare field. Careful consideration should be made about the order of products used be in the regimen (step 1, step 2, etc.). How to Fire a Patient - Legal Considerations for Dealing with Difficult Patients
Recorded June 19, 2019

Description:

Healthcare providers dismiss patients for numerous reasons. The circumstances are never identical, nor are they always undesirable. Often the decision is mutual. As the patient’s care evolves, sometimes the provider responsible for his treatment must change. These “exchanges” are natural and sometimes necessary to drive a patient’s recovery. It’s worth noting patients can dismiss doctors, too. Other times a patient is dismissed because he becomes a professional hazard. He doesn’t pay his bills. He abuses your staff. His presence creates distractions, which jeopardize the care of other patients. Reasons notwithstanding, when you need to dismiss a patient, the act is memorialized in a patient dismissal letter. These letters are chameleons. Their language must change to suit your patient’s circumstances. The art of writing the “bullet-proof” patient dismissal letter is one many a provide would love to master. Written correctly, these letters insulate you against potential charges of malpractice and patient abandonment.

The webinar will hit the following points:

  • Lasers
  • Why practices cannot dismiss a patient without following a formal process
  • Good reasons to dismiss a patient
  • Nailing down the process to dismissing a patient
  • Chemical Safety Data Sheets
  • Exceptions to the rule for quickly terminating the doctor-patient relationship
